Carlos Vasconsellos has joined FERRERE’s Paraguay office as a partner, coming from Hughes Hubbard & Reed’s Miami office. The new partner was announced on February 1st, 2013.

Carlos Vasconsellos is a JD (Summa cum laude, Catholic University of Paraguay, 2007) and an LL.M. (Harvard Law School, 2010). He also underwent law studies at Duke University (Geneva, Switzerland, 2009) and at the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina, 2008).

After being admitted at the New York Bar in 2010, Vasconsellos joined the US firm Hughes Hubbard & Reed, where he practiced for almost three years as an associate at the New York and Miami offi¬ces. His US law practice focused on banking and corporate matters. Vasconsellos was involved in structuring miscellaneous financing deals including syndicated loans, club loans, bilaterals, and other financing facilities, both representing banks and borrowers. Among banks, he worked for clients such as HSBC, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Citibank N.A. Banco Itau S.A., Bank of America N.A., Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi, BNP Paribas, HSBC, Sumitomo Mitsui Bank and Wells Fargo. He was also involved in numerous aircraft financing transactions for clients such as Bank of America and GE.

Vasconsellos participated in several Latin American M&A transactions involving countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, and Uruguay. He also advised the Central Bank of Paraguay with respect to its foreign reserves and in connection with a master currency swap agreement with the International Finance Corporation (“IFC”), which enabled the IFC to provide loans to the Paraguayan private sector in local currency.

Before then, Vasconsellos had practiced bankruptcy law representing two domestic banks in connection with insolvency proceedings in Paraguay. He also practiced civil law in a well-renowned local firm and taught Civil Law and Contracts at the Catholic University of Paraguay.

While in law school at the Catholic University of Paraguay, Vasconsellos was Class President, Student Representative to the Superior University Council, Campaign Manager for Student Council Elections, and Co-founder of the Student Organization “Identidad”. He was also a member of the Paraguay junior national basketball team.
